Śrī Laghu Sundarakāṇḍam

Nitya Pārāyaṇa Saṅgrahaḥ

श्रीलघुसुन्दरकाण्डम् · नित्यपारायणसङ्ग्रहः

A book intended not for the library shelf but for the pūjā room — a companion in daily prayer, pārāyaṇa, upāsanā and spiritual practice.

Śrī Rāma embracing Hanumān

For countless generations, recitation of the Sundarakāṇḍa has held a cherished place in the Hindu tradition. It is recited for iha-para śreyas — auspiciousness and spiritual welfare in this life and beyond. The sacred account of Śrī Hanumān’s journey in the service of Śrī Rāma continues to inspire faith, courage, devotion, perseverance and complete surrender to the Divine.

Today, with younger generations educated in English-medium institutions and families living across the world, direct access to Sanskrit and to Rāmāyaṇa pārāyaṇa is becoming harder. The Laghu Sundarakāṇḍam was composed with this concern at heart.

3,000+ślokas of Vālmīki condensed
400+Sanskrit verses
7chapters · one per day
108verse Aṣṭottaraśata selection

What the book contains

A concise yet complete narration of the Sundarakāṇḍa in Sanskrit, composed with reverence and devotion. Every effort has been made to remain faithful to the spirit of Ādikavi Vālmīki — preserving the bhāva (spirit), artha (meaning), rasa (aesthetic essence), śabda (sound) and chandas (metre) of the original.

The work brings together the concluding five sargas of the Kiṣkindhākāṇḍa, all sixty-eight sargas of the Sundarakāṇḍa, and the opening sarga of the Yuddhakāṇḍa. A narrative of more than 3,000 original ślokas is condensed into over 400 Sanskrit verses in seven chapters, preserving the continuity and substance of Vālmīki’s narrative.

How it fits into daily life

Each chapter takes roughly 10–20 minutes to recite, so the whole work can be completed comfortably over seven days as part of regular practice. For days when even that is not possible — or for recitation during difficulty, prayer or special observance — the book also contains the Aṣṭottaraśata Sundarakāṇḍam, a selection of 108 verses recited in about twenty minutes.

The Sanskrit verses are accompanied by simple IAST transliteration and clear English meanings (or Telugu bhāvārtha in the Telugu edition), so that even those who cannot read the original script can join the recitation and understand its meaning.

Reviewed within the tradition

The work has undergone a rigorous process of review under the guidance of senior Sanskrit scholars, among them Śrīmān Rangi Satyanarayana Sharma, an accomplished scholar, poet and teacher. It received the blessings of Mahākavi Padma Shri Brahmaśrī Dr. Madugula Nagaphani Sharma, and was blessed and inaugurated by His Holiness Śrī Vidyā Śaṅkara Bhārati Swamiji, Śaṅkarācārya of Śrī Puṣpagiri Mahāsaṃsthānam.

It is offered not as a literary achievement, but as a humble service at the feet of Śrī Sītā-Rāma and Śrī Hanumān. May this small effort help carry the sacred Rāmakathā from one generation to the next, from one home to another, and from one heart to another.

Composed and compiled by Chillappa Hari Prasad Shastri.
