Śrī Durgā Saptaśatī — cover showing the Devī seated on a lion

The Śrī Durgā Saptaśatī — also known as the Devī Māhātmya and the Caṇḍī Pāṭha — forms chapters 81 to 93 of the Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa. These thirteen chapters hold a unique and sacred place in the Śākta tradition.

King Suratha has lost his kingdom; Samādhi, a merchant, has been cast out by his own family. They meet at the hermitage of the sage Medhas with a question that is not about what they have lost, but about the mind: why does attachment persist even when we understand the cause of our sorrow? In reply, Medhas teaches them the power of Mahāmāyā — and the Devī Māhātmya.

So the text is far more than a tale of battles between gods and demons. It is a spiritual journey that begins with the very human problem of attachment, reveals Mahāmāyā as its root, and ends by showing the way of surrender to the Devī.

“Let recitation begin with the words and reach their meaning; let meaning blossom into devotion; let devotion become practice; and let practice lead, in the end, to inner realisation.”
